Everything was going as planned. Shayla picked Xavier up from the hospital against his doctor’s wishes. He had said that although Xavier was improving, he still needed 24-hour around the clock assistant. Xavier still had to be helped into the wheelchair. His legs were still too weak to support all of his body weight.

Shayla was actually helpful, Xavier thought. She convinced the doctor that she would be staying with him and providing all the care that he needed. Since they knew her from working in the emergency room, they’d allowed him to be signed over into her care. Xavier knew that they were just following policy to keep from getting sued later if something happened to him. It wasn’t like they could hold him against his will anyway. If he died from complications, it would be his own fault for checking out early.

Shay’s son seemed to be quiet enough. He only spoke when he was spoken to, something Xavier was sure that his mother had stressed to him. It wasn’t typical behavior for a little boy. Xavier had expected him to be bouncing off the walls. Xavier kind of felt sorry for the boy. His mother talked at him rather than to him.

When they arrived at customs, Shayla pushed his wheelchair up to the desk.

“Good afternoon,” the lady behind the counter greeted. “How can I help you?”

“We want to check in for the 2:00 flight to the Cayman Islands.”

“I can help with that,” she smiled. “I just need to see your passports.

Both Xavier and Shayla pulled out the documents. Xavier passed his to the lady and so did Shay. The woman looked at each of them before stating that they had a problem.

“What’s the problem?” Xavier asked.

“Your son’s passport is expired.”

“He’s not my son but whatever.” Xavier scowled at Shay. How could she check out her own passport but not her son’s to make sure that it was still legit, he thought?

“Well, how can his be expired and mine is not when I got both of them at the same time. Check it again,” Shayla barked.

“If you look right here ma’am, you can see the expiration date has passed.” She pointed to the spot showing Shayla that the passport was not valid.

“How can that be?” Shayla questioned.

“Well, persons over 16 years of age, renew every ten years but kids under that age have to renew every 5 years,” the lady informed.

“How the hell was I supposed to know that?” Shayla asked.

“You look at the fucking passport,” Xavier yelled.

People started to stare. Shayla was so embarrassed that she wanted to take her son and run from the airport. But this was bigger than her. She wanted her son’s father back. He deserves to have his father, she thought.

“Is there some way that we can work this out so that we can still catch that 2:00 flight,” Shayla asked the lady.

“I’m afraid not. It’s against the law to travel out of the country without a valid passport,” she answered.
